Dr. M. Rofiq Muzakkir is a lecturer in the Department of International Relations at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), specializing in Global Islamic Politics, Muhammadiyah Studies, and Islamic Anthropology. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Islamic Law from Al-Azhar University – Egypt, a Master’s degree in Middle Eastern Studies from Gadjah Mada University, and a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Arizona State University – USA. His research focuses on political thought, legal thought, and the impact of modernity and colonialism on Islamic ethics and legal discourse. His dissertation examined shifts in Muslim scholars’ perspectives on power and legitimacy, influenced by Islamic traditions and Western political philosophy. In addition to his academic role, he has been active in Muhammadiyah, serving as a member of its Tarjih and Tajdid Council and as chairman of the Muhammadiyah Special Branch in the United States (PCIM USA). Until recently, he is an IASH-Alwaleed Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Edinburgh, contributing to discussions on Islamic ethics and legal thought in the modern era.
